Department of Business

Undergraduate student studying Economic and Financial Studies at Macquarie University, Sydney Australia

Careers

The Department of Business encompasses the fields of marketing, business administration, international business, human resources management and demography. This diversity is unique and provides students with a range of interest areas and career options to explore.

Our degrees provide great value for money, since the cost of Commonwealth supported places within our degrees are amongst the lowest in Australia, but our graduates have better than average employment prospects and higher than average starting salaries. (Good Universities Guide, 2006)

Career options following graduation can wide and varied or focused and specialised.

For those wishing to keep their career path general in focus, Macquarie offers general degree such as Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) or Bachelor of Economics (BEc) which provides flexibility in subject choice around a core of studies in economics and commerce.

If a specialist career is being considered, our specialist undergraduate programs such as the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), Bachelor of International Business (BIntB), Bachelor in Human Resource Management (BHRM) and Bachelor of Commerce-Marketing (BCom-Mktg) provide the foundation required for careers in these areas.

To provide further career options, the BBA can be combined in double degreees with BCom, BEc and other degrees such as Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Applied Finance.

If you are beginning your investigation why not check out three summary documents?

These will provide general information on the area of interest, degrees on offer, roles and employment opportunities, likely salaries and contact details to find out more.

Visit the Macquarie University Career Development Office for access to more information on business careers from the Graduate Careers Australia site and others that provide industry career profiles. Also on the site is useful career planning and job application information, resume advice, interview strategies, information on assessment centres and psychometric/aptitude tests, and schedules of workshops provided by the University and large employers.

Of great importance to second last year and final year students is the graduate recruitment section which outlines graduate recruitment programs, the graduate recruitment process, what employers seek and how to market yourself.
